Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 makes first flight and aims to enter service in 2027
Textron Aviation's smallest jet took off for the first time in its new generation version, reaching 41,000 feet in a 2.7-hour flight. The M2 Gen3 debuts Garmin G3000 Prime avionics and advances toward FAA certification.
The Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 made its first flight on June 2, a milestone that pushes Textron Aviation's smallest jet into the advanced phase of the certification program. The prototype climbed to 41,000 feet during a 2.7-hour flight, in which the team evaluated the aircraft's basic behavior and key onboard systems. All validation tests were completed as expected.
The big news of the Gen3 generation is in the cockpit. The M2 debuts the Garmin G3000 Prime avionics suite, with touch controllers and high-resolution screens, the same technological leap that Textron takes to the other renewed models in the Citation family. It is the update that modernizes the piloting experience of the entry-level jet without changing the formula that made the model successful.
The M2 is the entry point into the world of Cessna jets, a range that tends to attract the owner-pilot and operator taking the first step from the turboprop to the pure jet. Keeping this step up to date is important: it is because of this that many customers begin a decades-long relationship with the brand, later migrating to the larger CJ and Citation.
Textron aims for the M2 Gen3 to enter service in 2027. For the Brazilian market, where light Citations have an established presence, the arrival of the new generation means a modern replacement option in the category — and reinforces the direct dispute with the Embraer Phenom 100EX for the preference of those who buy their first jet.
